Who Are You?

Can someone be a “believer” and not be a “disciple?” Consider the words of Jesus. “Jesus said to the people who believed in him, ‘You are truly my disciples if you keep obeying my teachings. And you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.’” John 8:31-32 All over the world people are marching in the streets crying out for freedom. The foundation of our great nation was liberty; the yearning for liberty rings in the heart of humanity. Jesus said that there is one place-really, one person-that can satisfy that hunger, and that person is Jesus. This Sunday we will open our Bibles to John chapter 8 and we will explore this amazing passage.

Jesus Is
We have never heard anyone speak like this!
That was the excuse given by the soldiers sent to arrest Jesus when asked why they returned without Christ in custody. Not because of weapons–words. But what those sent to apprehend Jesus heard were not just words, they were the words of The Word. Why were these men, who were sent to take Jesus, taken with the words of Jesus? Because what the soldiers said was true and what they heard was "Truth." No one ever spoke as Jesus, “The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.” John 6:63 [more...]

Our Inadequacy His Abundance

Have you ever been somewhere with a friend, and your friend did something - a look, a motion of the hand, or a tilt of the head - and you knew he was sending you a sign or a signal? You recognized the “sign” because this person was a friend; you had seen this “look” before. Jesus had “signs” for his disciples - specific things he did and ways he communicated with his friends. John tells us seven of those “signs.” He includes us in on the friendship circle. Sunday we will open our Bibles and continue where Brian left off with the “first sign”, and in that sign we are invited to trade our embarrassment of inadequacy for the joy of His abundance. What a trade! Don’t forget to bring your insufficiency because “The All sufficient One” is offering a trade you really don’t want to miss.

The War for Community

In John 1, Jesus called his disciples to “Follow me,” and then the first place we know he took them was to a wedding celebration. In Mark 2, he told Matthew to leave his tax booth and “Follow me,” and the first place they went was back to Matthew’s house to host a big party with a bunch of his friends and fellow “sinners.” The early church was devoted to being together, eating together, praying together, as well as worship and studying the Apostles teaching. Many know what it’s like to have a Bible study or to come to a worship service, but do we really know how to experience authentic community with one another? Are we being the church, or are we simply coming to church? [more...]

The War For…

“Is God really good?” Maybe in the middle of some chaotic occurrence, that kind of question just seems to hang in the air. Maybe you would not even feel free to verbalize your feelings. Something like, “If Go...

His Name Is…

We live in an age of uncertainty. As a culture, we have never had more information at our fingertips and less confidence in our hearts. We don’t know who to trust, which way to turn, or on what to hang our hopes. Holidays turn everything up a notch. A number of years ago, I read a phrase, “Wise men still seek Him.” I know it’s a cliché, but I think the reason it became so is that it rings true. What made these men wise was not that they were certain of everything; they knew less than the people who possessed the prophecies. They had to ask questions of people who knew more than they, but possessed less faith. They were wise because they walked toward the light they were given. This Sunday we will walk in the way of the wise. We will open our Bibles to explore Matthew‘s account of Jesus’ birth and early infancy.

Mega Joy!

What does Christmas sound like? If Christmas was a movie and you were commissioned to score the soundtrack, how would it sound? If you listen to the music, it is obvious how the producer of the movie wants those watching to feel or react. Would it surprise you to know that Christmas already has a soundtrack? This sound is associated with the mighty name of our God, "Jehovah Sabaoth!" Do you hear what I hear?

Is Peace On Earth Possible?

This Sunday is the second Sunday of Advent, and the message is peace. You know the passage, it's the angelic chorus "Glory to God in the highest, peace on earth, goodwill to men." Notice the words: not just "peace", "peace on earth". Is "peace on earth" possible? Sometimes I think I need this message more than you do. So, this week we will open the Scriptures and see what God means when He promises peace.

Simeon – Luke 2

Imagine a man, an old man, holding a baby in his arms and singing - not singing to the baby, but about the baby. This baby is unlike any other; this is the dream, the dream of his life. In his arms he holds the Messiah. The man calls him by a name, but it is not the name given to him by his mother; it is the name given by a prophet. The prophet is Isaiah, and the name is "The Consolation of Israel." This week we will listen to the Song of Simeon, and we will consider just how important is hope.
