“Is God really good?” Maybe in the middle of some chaotic occurrence, that kind of question just seems to hang in the air. Maybe you would not even feel free to verbalize your feelings. Something like, “If God is good, why is there so much evil? It is not accidental that one of the most ancient books in the Scriptures, the book of Job, centers on this very question: “Why do good people suffer?” The question of “the goodness of God” presses us consider the character of God. For the last three weeks we have been opening the Scriptures and contemplating, “Knowing God.” This week we are going to consider what is at stake in our confidence in God’s goodness. God is good; He is good no matter what we think. His character does not rise and fall in calibration to our confidence. But knowing God is good does change us, and not knowing God is good has predictable consequences. This week we will open the Scriptures and see how knowing God is good impacts people who really KNOW God’s goodness.
