Every story has a beginning.

In the great story of the Bible, the beginning is with God. He is creating; His Spirit is hovering over chaos ready to generate beauty; His Word is bringing forth a new world from nothing. These are deep and mysterious truths, but from them spring a creation saturated in goodness.

Furthermore, in this first chapter of the One Story, we learn of our own beginnings. This week’s passage, Genesis 1-2, does not merely tell us how we came to exist. It also reveals the origins of our identity and destiny in God and in His Kingdom. Who are we? What is our purpose? What were we created for? And why does it matter? As we shall see, the answers to these questions emerge from the Scripture itself:

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth…”
