In response to a lament about the prohibition of prayer in public schools, I once heard a man say, “Actually, I’m not too concerned about it. As long as there are tests in schools, there will be prayer in schools.”

But of course our schools and school systems need more than just the desperate prayers of perplexed students. Our schools need nothing less than the hand of God working to bring the blessedness of his Kingdom into all kinds of challenges and opportunities.

For years, Grace has set aside the last Sunday of the summer to pray for the schools, teachers, and educators in our community. This week, we will once again gather around the words of Jesus–the greatest Teacher–to see how his great model prayer is not only a formula to be recited but in fact a way to welcome the lessons of the entire Sermon on the Mount into our lives.

Then, we will pray, for surely there are many tests ahead.
