“Judge not,” Jesus says.

For such a simple phrase, it raises all kinds of questions. Don’t we need to judge some behavior? Or should we simply “live and let live”? After all, who are we to judge?

Some who say they follow Jesus blatantly disregard this command, earning for themselves a “judgmental” reputation. Others take this phrase to mean that we should not discern or judge any activity whatsoever, dismissing questionable activities with a shrug and a nod to this verse in Matthew 7:1.

But in fact the way we interpret Jesus’ words has everything to do with the way we see each other, ourselves, and God. And if we get it right, suddenly we can begin to learn what it is like to live in God’s reality where what we ask is given, what we seek is found, and where we knock the door is open. Are those the words that characterize your life? Or do you find yourself facing logjams time and again? If so, how might we remove the logs?
