When I was a kid, I was a huge fan of Captain Kirk, Jacques Cousteau and Daniel Boone. I think the connection is that they were all explorers, they went where others had not been and it seemed exciting. But life rarely feels that way for most; routine and challenges take up the hours and the occasional attempt at something special makes us look like poor imitations of Clark Griswold.

Are there still frontiers and can we enter them?

We’re going to look at two major passages of scripture: the rebellion in the book of Numbers that cements the 40 years of wandering in the desert, and Deuteronomy 6 which is the retelling of the law by Moses. It is written just before Moses’ death and the entering of the promised land by Joshua and a new generation of people. These passages bookend one of the darker times of the Hebrew people. They are getting ready to enter a new land and, though delayed, there are some lessons in there for us today. Maybe there are frontiers all around us and just maybe we can go forth.
