We often use the word “mother” to describe and understand big and important things.
Mother ship.
Mother ship.
Mother hen.
Mother Russia.
Mother nature.
Mother tongue.
Rarely, however, have I heard “mother” used to help us understand God.
Unless, of course, you’re reading Isaiah, where the prophet matches the metaphor of motherhood with God in some surprising and powerful ways that shape not only how we approach our mothers but also our Maker.
