If you’ve ever driven toward the beach, then you know the feeling of seeing the first palm tree along the road. We’re almost there!
If you had been in Jerusalem when Jesus rode a donkey into the city during that final Passover week, you would have known he was NOT headed for the beach. But the sight of palms would have communicated something similar. We’re almost there! The crowds who waved their palm branches thought, All we need to do is make Jesus king, and he will solve all of our problems!
In the verses that follow the triumphal entry scene in John 12, however, Jesus teaches us that our problems are bigger than we thought and that the way he intends to solve them is far costlier than expected. In the end, though, his reign is so magnetic that when he is lifted, he will draw all people to himself.
