“Sir, give us this bread always.”

For many of us, meals are a big deal. We prepare them; we count their calories; we look forward to them; and, occasionally, we regret them (particularly if the dessert was disappointing). But whether we are eating well or poorly, our hunger always returns, usually within a few hours.

In John 6, we find the story of an enormous, miraculous meal: Jesus’ feeding of the five thousand. For the crowds, this meal was enough to make them get into boats, cross the Sea of Galilee, and seek after Jesus (6:24). But when they ask him for more loaves, Jesus offers a meal both satisfying and scandalous: “Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you” (6:53).

Nearly everyone walked away, offended by Jesus’ words. But the handful who remained discovered the truth of simple, spiritual sustenance.

Do we know this truth? And do we know how to trust it?
