These are the very words of Jesus…
“If your little boy asks for a serving of fish, do you scare him with a live snake on his plate? If your little girl asks for an egg, do you trick her with a spider? As bad as you are, you wouldn’t think of such a thing—you’re at least decent to your own children. And don’t you think the Father who conceived you in love will give the Holy Spirit when you ask him?” (The Message, Luke 11:10-13)

There is no debate the Scriptures speak of an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. We know the Holy Spirit is not water; He is God! Yet, Jesus shouted, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me!… Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.” We are not left in doubt what Jesus meant because it says, “When He said living water he was speaking of the Spirit.”

God defies classification. We are told that God is a consuming fire. We all know the difference in a fire and a consuming fire. A fire is what you sit before and it keeps you warm; a consuming fire is a roaring blaze that defies concealment or containment. It is not cozy, it is consuming. I think if the truth be told, most people who call themselves Christians are far more comfortable with a “contained fire” than a “consuming fire.”

We are often taken by the latest “fad,” but fads fade. Holy Spirit Fire does not fade; it flames, consumes, overwhelms and awakens. It is the consuming fire of God’s Holy Spirit that sets the captive free. Do we crave Spiritual freedom or are we content in our cozy captivity? Dare we hunger for, grieve for, ask for and expect the Holy effusion and engulfing Presence of the Holy Spirit that goes beyond a warm heart and blazes forth into a consuming passion? Oh, that we can be consumed such?

Come Holy Spirit!
